All Maui County recycling centers and associated HI-5 redemption centers remain open as “essential businesses” under public health emergency rules, the county said Tuesday.
The public should observe the following guidelines, including:
• Taking only accepted materials to county recycling dropbox centers: #1 and #2 plastic bottles, aluminum/metal cans, cardboard, newspaper and glass.
• Cleaning and rinsing all bottles, jugs and cans.
• Wearing a mask and gloves while at the recycling center.
• Practicing social distancing of at least six feet at all times.
Recycling and redemption centers include handwashing stations for staff and members of the public. All essential workers must wear masks when interacting with the public and disinfect HI-5 recycling “sorting” barrels after each use. Large county “dropbox” bins also are disinfected intermittently throughout the day.
Recycling materials from homes where residents have tested positive for COVID-19 need to be triple-bagged, sealed and disposed of along with regular trash.
Hours of operation vary at recycling and redemption centers:
• Kihei and Makawao: HI-5 Redemption, open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily; recycling centers, open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
• Haiku and UH-Maui College: HI-5 Redemption, open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday; recycling centers, open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
• Hana Landfill, Olowalu Transfer Station and Molokai: Recycling centers open 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday.
• Molokai HI-5 redemption center at the Molokai landfill: Open from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
